BREAKING NEWS- Tsunami Warning in Hawaii

The State of Hawaii is under a tsunami warning after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake rattled Chile.
Hawaiian authorities were rushing to evacuate up to 100,000 residents and tourists from low-lying coastal areas Saturday morning as an estimated 3-to-8-foot tsunami raced toward the islands at the speed of a jet plane. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a Pacific-wide warning. An advisory, the lowest level of notice, is in effect for most of the West Coast of the U.S., including Alaska, Oregon and California. Hawaii was expected to be among the hardest hit.

This morning the President briefed the press:
"Once again, we've been reminded of the awful devastation that can come at a moment's notice," Obama added. "We can't control nature, but we can and must be prepared for disaster when it strikes."

Los Angeles County fire officials said they were not warning people to stay off beaches because they did not expect waves to rise more than 3 feet. But National Weather Service meteorologists said harbors could see a little bit more turbulence. The largest wave fluctuations were expected on south-facing beaches such as Malibu, but that even those weren’t expected to reach dangerous levels. He said the rise in tides was supposed to reach La Jolla just before noon and that authorities there would warn L.A. County fire officials if there were reason to take drastic action. Corpus said that as of about 9:30 a.m., surf conditions were not good, at least in Hermosa Beach, because of the winter storm.
